Our stringent processes ensure that the integrity of the produce is not lost. We go to great lengths to prevent contamination. Our strict quality control, safe storage processes and minimal processing ensure that all that is good is preserved from her farm to your kitchen!
Since we do not work with farmers with large landholdings, it is imperative that farmers practicing NPM do so in clusters to avoid contamination due to water/wind. Farmers from a village form clusters and pledge to practise pesticide free agriculture. Skilled extension workers from our partner FPOs regularly visit the fields to make sure that chemical pesticides are not used during the entire cultivation period. Post harvest, random samples are collected from clusters by representatives of Safe Harvest and are sent to FSSAI accredited labs to be tested for pesticide residues.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) over the last one year has taken a number of significant steps to enable adoption of higher standards for quality of safe food products. It is now mandatory for all safe food commodities sold in retail markets to be tested for synthetic pesticide residues. We test representative samples from every batch of every product in FSSAI accredited labs for different pesticide residues as per the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011. Every sample tested generates an MRL (Maximum Residue Limit) Report. The MRL reports attest to the ‘Pesticide Free’ nature of our products.
Once the representative samples clear the residue tests, the FPO aggregates the produce from farmers at the farm gate. The procurement procedure followed by our FPOs is participative and transparent, weighing foolproof and open to scrutiny, transportation and storage bags provided for. By offering the nearest mandi price to the smallholder farmer at the farm-gate, Safe Harvest significantly reduces the risk that the smallholder farmer would otherwise bear.
The procured primary agricultural produce is transported to trusted milling facilities. Personnel from Safe Harvest ensure that the NPM produce is labelled and stored separately from Non-NPM produce. Further, great care is taken to ensure that NPM commodities are milled separately. To prevent any chance of contamination, bleed runs are carried out with samples of NPM produce that are then rejected. Diligent records are maintained for each of the above steps. The milled produce is then transported to our hub in Hyderabad.
STORAGE & CLEANING
The milled produce received in our hub is stored, graded, processed and cleaned in strict adherence with the NPM protocol. These products are stored in cocoons. Cocoons are hermetic storage containers made of UV resistant PVC material. The cocoons loaded with the commodity are flushed with Carbon dioxide and sealed completely for 11 days. This step eliminates any residual insects from the farm-gate. The produce is then graded, processed and cleaned in our state of the art Buhler machine. The products undergo a final round of manual cleaning to eliminate all chances of contamination.
PACKING & DISPATCH
The final commodities are then hygienically packed in food-grade plastic and are marketed under ‘Safe Harvest’ brand and under the 'Zero' label. The Zero logo is a mark of our promise that the products are completely devoid of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and GM seeds. The packed products are then dispatched to more than 350 retail outlets in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and NCR.
